Across the street there is another independent senior/ over age 55 building. You can easily see the lights of the building from your chair.
For a few months you have regularly told me about what is going on there:
A man walks out to his balcony every night. He places a light in a specific location. Then, over the hours, he gradually moves the light across the balcony. Finally, he takes it back in.
I look at the "light" that is being "moved" across the balcony. I see into someone's living room, with their TV in the background. If they move , we might see the shadows of their movements. I tell you it is only someone's living room we can see into, but you don't seem to hear or believe me.
Now, as we enter the Christmas holiday season, you have become fixated on the decorations.
"They had a team build that thing on the roof over there," you tell me.
"I think they are giving rides".
"Who are they giving rides to?", I ask.
"The people that live there", you reply.
I crawl across the floor, trying to get a vantage point similar to what you see from you chair, what is it you see across the road?
I look and I see that several balcony's have white lights strung on the railings. Am I seeing what you are talking about? There is a Christmas tree, shining bright white lights, under one string of ceiling level icicle style lights. Is this the "ride" to which you refer?
"its just Christmas lights, dad, and a Christmas tree".
You continue to study it, "maybe", you say.

You say, "I am surprised they haven't gotten press coverage on that thing".
"Its not running today".
I say, "Maybe they took the day off or are closed since it is Sunday".

I call you at 7 AM. No answer. Sleeping in, I think.

what you should do if this happens to you ; Alternative title: We didn't sue the bank
1. Be aware that the ideal / already conned victim may view your interests and actions to protect them from scammers as hostile .
a. Your trusted parent /loved one may not see you as their advocate even if you are only acting in their self interest. They are built up, flattered, reinforced and instructed by the CON artists to keep the truth from you and to prove to you that they are right and you are wrong.
In my case, not asking dad for permission to do something was a big change.
Part of being an adult child dealing with a vulnerable parent does involve a shifting of the roles. You cannot ask for permission to do what is right when you are in a circumstance such as this.
2. Legally secure the owned property so it cannot be stolen or that loans cannot be placed using it as collateral
a. Talk with estate lawyer
b. Use your power of attorney before it is revoked (if you end up in a hostile situation where the victim and scammers are on one side and you are on the other side)
c. If necessary, court ordered conservatorship is the last resort .
Conservatorship is a kind of Guardianship , but it is restricted to only dealing with financial affairs, allowing the person to maintain their autonomy in other aspects of life.
Legal advice for the conservatorship process totaled in excess of $10,000 in our case (using a general attorney from a small town, as opposed to a Eldercare attorney specialist, which may or may not be less expensive. Our case also involved keeping the attorney in the loop on multiple lines of evidence of financial incompetence as they became evident, which was a time consuming process, possibly not necessary in all cases)
If the victim is sufficiently impaired that they are not capable of personal self-care (ie, beyond financial oversight needs), such as feeding, grooming, etc, then Guardianship may be apart of this process. Guardianship requires physician /social services documentations as well.
3. Report to police, state and federal Fraud resources (including attorney general for your state) but don't expect much help from the law.
Even the loss of an individuals entire life savings is small potatoes in the world of international fraud. The police system is not equipped to deal with these individual cases which often have international connections.
4. Document, Document, Document.
5. Recognize if there is one form of scam taking place against your senior Victim, there may be more.
Look for evidence of credit card fraud, which can be traced and for which legal/ police recourse may be available.
6. We didn't sue the bank, but if I had it all to do over again, I would investigate this option. The bank has a responsibility to recognize suspicious transactions, especially international wire transfers.

How to understand it all
The blog shows the actual email transcripts and related documents related to the financial fraud inflicted on a vulnerable and financially incompetent senior citizen.
Note that the the reports and dates are accurate, including misspelling of words, poor grammar, etc.
The vulnerable senior was involved in MULTIPLE scams with presumably MULTIPLE different groups of scammers, at the same time. I believe that the different scam scenario groups did not know about each other, at least not until no earlier than Feb, 2010, possibly after that. For the lonely senior widower, the high level of stimulation that came through the repeated telephone and email interactions was, I am sure, exciting. He was also promised millions of dollars - multiple fortunes, all for the small price of the fees they asked him to pay. The military brotherhood connection of one scam was also an effective bait.
The phone was ringing 24/7 at that time. The senior Victim was driving from bank to bank and from Western Union to Western Union, to avoid suspicion, as instructed by the scammers.
When faced with the truth, the senior victim refused to consistently believe he was being scammed.
Emergency conservatorship Protected Person status was awarded by court order in March, 2010. Prior to that, the financial "bleeding" continued, largely unabated, except for what is described in the reports, achievable through Power of Attorney (which was revoked twice). Once liquid money resources were not available, scammers encourage the senior to sell valuables or to consider getting loans. In fact, in this case, the Senior Victim DID borrow $48,000 in early January, 2010, which he was in process of sending to scammers before the loan was discovered and 75% of its loss was prevented/stopped by family members.
Vulnerable seniors who get CONNED are also CONNED to believe that their family members need to be kept out of the loop, as is shown in this case. The Bank saw the financial "bleeding" for a long time, too long, before they acted to inform responsible family members.

Dear George, I was up early this morning and had a foot doctor
appointment, but tried to work everything into the trip. Went to my

me worried. What happened, you reported you were going to try to

later he came down the hall with a very strange walk and just like that he
fell on his side and he tried but couldn't even get up and he was
now \breathing strrange and heavily and apkpeared to be in
pain. I just knew this was the end and as much as I hated to; do it
I wraped in a towel in a box and took him to the vet clinic and the shot
was administdered putting him out of his misery. My brother in law keeps
records on all the family pets and Whitey was over 18 years old which is way
above what most cats live. So now I have just one cat
but what a danndy she is. Dosent seem to mind being alone. Thats

lot of snow now and it has been a very cold winter thus far a great amount of
below zero tempertures, so have a good warm coat, cap and gloves

Dear John, You are right John in laying on a
little hell for not getting reports to you on how things are

Well today turned out as a lost cause, as I got up extra
early and went to my new bank in Smalltown2 which is a bout 10 - 12 amiles north of here to get the
cash I needed to send to David so he can get out of India, and what a let
down. they could not give me even half of the cash I wanted and needed
to sent to David. It made me mad, but their explanation they are just a small
bank which it is but very convienir\ent for me, but this lack of
cash really got to me, when I was so busy I could taste it. To appease
me they offered cashiers checks which is a good insturment but a very bad one
because no body in Worthington
They will have all the cash I need for me tomarrow
morning including the now cashed cashiers checks that no one else would
touch all at no charge because I am an account holder now.
It really going to be an improvement.
David just called and I gave
him an account of the day and the plans to be back in Worthington early tomarrow morning and the
first thing to happen will be getting Davids money on the way to him, and
he was trilled upon hearing that. I got diconnected before David told his
whole story about his plans when to fly etc. but when he is finalized he will
be sending an e-mail so I will get his notice and I will meet him at the
airport. This I expect will be with in a few days depending upon
weather. I tell you we really have a lot of snow but also this
afternoon it got warm enough there was some melting and it really helped to put
the highways back in good driving order. We are allready the
middle of January, and we usuasally have winter up to the Ist to
15th of April . And I am always busy so the winter flys past in a
hurry, but the really bad thing, so does the desirable spring , summer
and fall. You just can't win them all, I guess. I think
that gives you a great idea of what is going on here. But most important
get yourself out of that hell hole and back to the good ole US of A. where it
is a great deal safer than the area you are now in. Get home John,

the currency for genuineness positively ruled out any posibility it

knowledge has only recently been brought up to date on these factors but
they are so extremely important. I sure hope you are so other
people you worked with were knowledgable on the factors because that right
there could make the difference in what you in fact have/ I got my
education being exposed to Western Union and how they check every bill
that comes thru their place because the bank is the next step and
you will never get away with anything bogus with the

I have decided the smart thing for me is to sell my
truck. Its 2001 Dodge Dakota Sport in White and it is a
sharp looking truck It has only 68697 miles on it and it runs perfectly
and has always been properly serviced. Its a Quad Cab with 4
doors with folding back seeats so you can carray a lot with locked up
security. The truck has sprayed on in black liner which keeps rust
down and make the truck bed really nice. It has tinted glass a
great radio and a comfortable truck to drive. I want $7500 for it
and I just thought I should tell you about it, as It would be nice truck for
you traveling to Mississippi .
I have no idea what you have in mind but it is a very sharp looker. It
has black script lettering on each side with DAKOTA
SPORT which is reallly sharp. Just thought I would tell you

I 've got an idea, and I don't know why it has taken so long
to surface for me. Would you consider taking on another partner? I
know that almost sounds like a dumb question. I'm not
sure if I have ever told you anything about my ongoing problem with my
daughter. I know I have never told her anything about you as that
would have complicated things. Quite a while sooner than your search for somebody
to be a receiver for your goods I had been dealing in two deals, one in Africa
and one in England. they were deals that appealed to me with a horrendous pay
off and required some investment on my part but with in reason..

because my daughters name was on my my bank accounts, after
all she is my only child so it just seemed to make sence, then
when I was playing with my foreign deals and having a few wires sent, my bank
came to the conclusion I was possible getting scamed, and reported such to my
daughter, because they really did not know who 's money the account really
was. My daughter examined the situation and concluded that I was getting
scammed and reacted by sweeping the accounts clean and all of a sudden I had no
money. Nine years ago when my wife got very sick I gave her power of
attorney so it was easy for her to do so in the name of preserving it.
I had about 95% certainity of what I was doing
would pan out well but was going thru some snags. The African which was
the newest one really surged ahead and was wired to my bank, but when it got to
New York it drew attention and a segment of the United
Nations based in London took it back to London and wanted proof
that it had no contraband or drug money in it and two other more
complicated points about it.. In the closing in Johannisburg it was
required that I be at that banks closing of the hearing process, or if I
preferred to be represented by a lawyer I could, but they would accept only one
named layer and it was the same lawyer that I had already used for some prior
details. So
I had the lawyer go ahead and work with the London
As time went on nothing seemed to be happening, and
I can no longer meet expenses because my bank account has gone dry as I
explained . I needed money to operate so I approached my farmer and
he was willing to go along with what ever my needs were and I got operating out
of a new bank but that proved to be short lived. Sooner than

and we will be on our way again and David will be able to deliver the
goods. And if time should run out on me as I have to be in
Minneapolis you can trust my farmer to carry out my duties of
meeting Davids plane and tucking the trunks secuely away in either my house or
his place. That way I will know what is going on but am not exactly
involved in it wouldn't you say. I do not want to call his
place now to get his email address as then his wife would know, but rather
track him in the morning to get it and explain the deal . You decide what
you want to pay him but with reimbursement of all fund and expenses.
i would think payment of a half million would do the job.
To move that much money it would have to be wired to David and or
to whom David would have to pay the money to. Matter of fact
the later is the better idea. to have the money go directly to who has to

Dear John, Just tonight David called and
mentioned the emails he has sent me that I have not answered. Weel how
could I as i never received anything from David and it was making me sick
because I was thinking this thing is disentigrating. Then David said that

it big time. A flash all most knocked me down, but just from that remark

COMPUTER KNOWHOW WHICH HAS KEPT HIM FROM GETTING SOME JOBS HE WOULD HAVE
LIKED. THAT IMMEDIATELY MADE HER MAD AS HELL, AND SHE SHOT
BACK AT ME THAT " i THOUGHT SHE WOULD NEED XXXXX
TO DO THAT. YOU DON'T THINK I COULD DO THAT MYSELF, WELL I DID AND I DID
NOT NEED ASSISTANCE FROM XXXXX OR
ANYBODY!! AN 8IMMEDIATE ADMISSION THAT SHE HAD DONE IT
Well what more could I ask for? That is buy buy to your Power of attorney
and I hung up. So tomarrow morning the first thing I will do is
revoke her power of attorney for the second time. I let have
the POA back after she showed me what she had done that was all O.K. but
now useing it to spy on me it's done forever. I ordered her to
cancel all of my XXXXXXXXXX doctors appointments as I will not show. I
do want that stuff done so I am healed up by spring but I will go to Sanford
Mdical center in Sioux Falls , South
Dakota or maybe even to Sanfords
extension in Worthington
which is only 30 Miles. This just simplifies everything in
one stroke and I am happy about it. I have to conclude this story with one
fact, that my daughter intentions were good and for me, but
she is a block head about listening to the facts about the situation, and
the facts just trampeled her in the process. I do not relish in that, but
she is stil l young enough to learn something from it even at age 50 which she
turned this year. So now you know why I didn't get any email from
you for the last couple weeks, I was really worried
about you in that hell hole. But it is going to turn out O.K..Reswnd the
last 4 or 5 emails a second time to the new address you see inthe upper left
corner. Its simular but enough different it is victim@iw.net and My daughter can not get at those.
That was such good news David had about the pass from china
getting it for $8000, plus /$500 travel. Thats quite a change from
$68.000. I will still have to go thru my farmer, because my daughter
clearned out both of my bank accounts, for safe keeping she says, but it wil
ltake time to get that re- straightened out so I can operate the way I am
accoustemed. I am thinking I would be wise to work with my
farmer in getting the trunks from the airport and stashing them untill
you get here. Wjy? because my daughter says I am under FBI
surveylance, which I doubt, but why take the chance she could have done that.
Dont worry about my farmer, he is as honest as you could wish for, and he is no
blabber mouth, His worst vice is he drinks too much, but he is
incredible on what he can hold or do even after drinking too much. But of
course that is because he is 100% IRISH. and I am sure you know about
their repitation for holding their liquor. And I will not settle for any place unless it offers high
security, which may have been jeprodised by my daughter at my place.
Time will tell I am sure but I don't want to take any risks It is so
great to know you are OK and will get this message. I was really
wor ried over the last week plus. of what may have happened. Enough

on John???You know you have such a huge log on the Internet about
the huge scams you have been running and are currently runing. What
makes you tick, John Boy. I have my daughter to thank for wisening me up John
and I was rareing to go on the bigest payment of all borrowing from my farmer
$8,500 for that certificate from China when the news caught up
with me so david could deliver the cases of scrap paper or what did you put in
the cases. Well my farmer was reluctant and then every thing
hit. and you were revealed to be the phoney that you are.
Now you had better spend some of that big money you have been making off the
government. Right now you owe me $16,277 for money spent and sent to keep the story going and you could really simplfy
what will happen if you do not send a check to me for that amount. You
know I am retired and I can not afford to take that kind of bump. I know the
agent I will be turning this over to to do the collection from you and
you would do yourself a huge favor to pay me before that gets
started. Once he starts penalty charges. and interest
and his fees get added on and make for a much bigger demand.. I will
settle for the $16,277 figure of money I have laid out if you settle
immediately. But if he gets going he goes right to the
government payment system and reveals what you activities
have been. You have always stated how well the government is
paying you, you better use some of that now to get you out of this bind you put
yourself in. Let me hear from you immediately John. I will haunt
you the rest of your life and my agent will get a claim against your
estate for a greater figure than I am asking now. Please advise at
once. How do you sleep at nights living the life you are
living. You know your exact same story you sold me is on the
internet. Remember you were rankeled when I asked if you could tell
phoney bills from the real? Didn't you know what you
were doing? Jail time would be to good for you!!

smart to clean it up before the Military gets going on the subject.
